Stop Putting Humans 'In the Loop'. Put Them in the Lead.

Read the original on LinkedIn

At Davos last week, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet said something that should make every CIO pause: "The future of AI and companies is human in the lead." She went on to call the popular phrase "human-in-the-loop" a "huge disservice."

She's right. For too long, we've been talking about AI as if our primary role is to be a glorified supervisor, a safety net for when the machine gets it wrong. This narrative isn't just uninspiring; it's strategically flawed. It relegates our most valuable asset—our people—to a passive role in the most significant technological shift of our generation.

Being "in the loop" suggests a reactive posture. Being "in the lead" is about proactive, strategic direction. It's the difference between watching the game and coaching the team.

The Data Doesn't Lie: Human Skills Are Surging

This isn't just a feel-good sentiment. The data is screaming at us to pay attention. Coursera's latest Job Skills Report, released to coincide with Davos, found that as AI automates routine tasks, the value of human cognitive skills is skyrocketing.

  • Critical Thinking: 168% year-over-year growth in enrollment for this skill among data professionals.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: 126% YoY growth.
  • Data Quality & Cleansing: Both over 100% YoY growth.

AI is creating a massive demand for senior auditors of information, people who can spot flawed assumptions, apply contextual business judgment, and validate outputs. These are not the skills of a passive observer. These are the skills of a leader.

Why 'Human in the Lead' Solves the Real Blockers to AI Adoption

For all the talk about technology, the real barriers to enterprise AI adoption aren't technical. They're human. A recent interview with Out Systems' CEO highlighted three major blockers that I see constantly:

  1. The Talent Gap: It's not just a lack of coders. There is a scarcity of people who understand both the technology and the business. A "human-in-the-lead" culture focuses on developing this hybrid talent internally, empowering people to connect AI possibilities to business realities.
  2. The Confusion Fog: Vendors are all using the same buzzwords, creating a noisy, confusing landscape. When you put humans in the lead, you empower your teams to cut through the noise. They start with the business problem, not the vendor solution, and pull in the right technology as needed.
  3. The Internal Traction Challenge: CIOs are struggling to compete with the slick narratives of external consultants. A "human-in-the-lead" approach builds a distributed network of internal champions who can articulate the value of your technology strategy in their business units' language.

A 3-Step Framework for Putting Humans in the Lead

Shifting from "in the loop" to "in the lead" requires a conscious change in leadership.

  1. Empower, Don't Command: Move from a command-and-control style to a coaching, empowerment style. Create a framework for success and then get out of the way. Your goal is to build a team that can think for itself, not one that waits for instructions.
  2. Treat Your Team as an Asset, not a Cost: Your people are your primary engine for growth and innovation. This means investing in their skills, communicating with empathy, and fostering a psychologically safe environment in which they can challenge the status quo.
  3. Embed Critical Thinking into Everything: Make critical thinking a core competency. It needs to be part of your AI training, your L&D programs, and your daily stand-ups. Model it in your own leadership.

At Delta Dental, our mission is rooted in human-centered care. Applying that same principle to our technology strategy isn't just a competitive advantage; it's an organizational imperative.

We need to stop talking about being "in the loop" and start leading from the front.
